THE TOWER card in tarot is a scene of chaos and destruction. In the original card, there is a tall tower being struck down by a single bolt of lightning — a seemingly strong institution that in actuality is built on a shaky foundation. When chaos strikes, the whole tower is thrown down. It’s a scary card to pull.
After some changes to the deck, I decided that Denethor’s suicide during the battle at Minas Tirith was so fitting for this scene. A moment of extreme upheaval, sudden drastic change to the structure of the kingdom of Gondor. But, just as the card promises, that change was ultimately for the better. From the rubble of the war rose Gondor as it was always meant to be — with its rightful king at the head.
